AboutWhat this is
A private register of the castles of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, maintained as a hobby. No advertising, no affiliation, no tickets sold.
Why it exists
There is no shortage of writing about the Rhine castles. What is harder to find is a plain statement, for each site, of which dates are documented, which are traditional, and how much of the visible building is nineteenth- or twentieth-century work. That gap is what this register tries to fill.
Each entry is deliberately short. Where a claim cannot be traced to something on the sources page it should not be here, and if you find one, please say so.
Scope
The register covers castles with substantial standing fabric between the Binger Pforte and Koblenz. Sites reduced to earthworks or foundations are excluded, as are the palaces of the lower Rhine and the fortifications of Koblenz itself, which belong to a different subject.
Opening hours, ticket prices and ferry timetables are given only where they materially affect whether a visit is possible at all. They are not maintained and should not be relied on.
Method
Everything here is compiled from published secondary literature and from visits. No archival research is claimed. Photographs are not published on this site; the schematic plates are drawn from field sketches and are massing diagrams only, not surveys.
Corrections
Corrections are welcome and are the main reason the site is public. Please include the page, the statement at issue and a reference. Corrections are applied without ceremony and without a changelog; if you want to know whether something changed, keep a copy.
