2026-02-11Why a register and not a guide
A note on scope, and on what this site deliberately does not attempt.
There are good printed guides to the Middle Rhine and I am not writing another one. What I could not find was a plain register: one page per castle, with the dates that are actually attested, the dates that are traditional, and a clear statement of how much of the standing fabric is nineteenth-century.
So that is what this is. Opening hours change and I will not try to keep them current; check the operator before travelling. Anything on these pages that carries a date should be traceable to something on the sources page, and where it is not, that is a fault to be reported.
The field notes are separate from the register on purpose. The register is meant to be dull and checkable. The notes are opinion.
