2026-03-09Getting to Pfalzgrafenstein in March
The ferry is a function of the river, not of the timetable.
The castle reopens in February but the ferry does not run at high water, and in March high water is the normal condition. I lost a day to this and will not lose another.
Check the gauge at Kaub before travelling — it is the standard reference gauge for this stretch and is published continuously. Above roughly 4.5 m the crossing stops. Below about 1 m it also stops, for the opposite reason.
The compensation is that the island is entirely yours when you do get across. There was one other visitor.
